Yukon Trip 2009 - Day 20 Part 2 - lower Dempster

A little further down the highway we pulled into another track leading away from the highway....'
If you look closely at the above shot, taken from this next stopping place, you can see some buildings off in the distance....this is an 'Outfitter's' residence. It is right on the side of the highway. There are signs in the area warning to watch for Horses as apparently this outfitter allows his horses to roam free during the 'off season' - when we had gone past, his yard was partially flooded and there were quite a variety of ducks and shorebirds making use of it.

Ernie spotted this opening in a mound at the side of our parking area.....he thought it might be an opening to a mine shaft or something, but discovered that the opening went right through the hillside to the other side...perhaps someones root cellar or cold storage????

Another view looking across the tundra from this vantage point...this would be looking north again.....

I had been working my way closer to the lake....there were a number of ducks on it, including a pair of Long tail, but of course as I got closer - and it was hard going across the bumpy, soggy tundra....they simply moved into the reeds at the edges...so I finally gave up.

I don't know what those little pink flowers were....some sort of Heath no doubt. They didn't really look like Bog Rosemary, but perhaps a relative.......

it's a bird! it's a plane! it's a Mosquito! I know this shot is very similiar to the earlier one, but I've posted it as it caught a mosquito flying by quite nicely. Actually we experienced very few mosquitoes this day....perfect temperature and hardly any bugs....a perfect day for our last day on the Dempster!

Look closely at this one and you'll see Ernie and Shantz wandering back from somewhere way back there!

While Ernie and Shantz wandered, I concentrated on the area close by.....there is a bird in this picture........

No, not this one....he was nearby....another Willow Ptarmigan.....

and another closer view of the male Willow Ptarmigan.....

no, it was his mate, this female Willow Ptarmigan that was hiding at the base of that shrub.....

and just because these would be the last Ptarmigan we would see....you get one final close up of the male.
