Yukon Trip 2009 - Day 22 Part 2 - Klondike Highway

Back on the road again, we reached Stewart Crossing where the road heads off to Keno and Mayo and eventually through to Watson Lake. Debated about taking that route but had been warned that the road was a bit iffy and figured it best not to press our luck. The north side of the road leading off to Mayo had this incredible 'rock garden'

You really had to marvel at Mother Nature's handiwork!

yet another look at this incredible natural garden......

This is a type of Penstemon growing in the area.......

Continued on, as it became the dogs supper time we pulled off into a side road....after feeding the dogs, while Ernie made a cup of coffee, I wandered along the edge of the road and immediately a pair of these shorebirds - I think Solitary Sandpipers - started chattering at me from the tree tops. I was a bit taken aback......figured there must be a nest somewhere near but they never left the tops of the trees......

Another view of the (I think) Solitary Sandpiper......

and a final look........at this point figured we'd better leave since they were so upset.

I did manage a picture of this type of Locoweed that had been growing in the area.

back on the road again and more roadside flowers.......

a closer view of these beautiful vetches.........

and one final look back.......

Pulled into Tachun Creek Campground.......

Where Moose Creek had been all 'blue', Tachun Creek was all 'pink'......and not quite as many mosquitoes!

Final, close up look of one of the Wild Roses growing in the campground.

Campground fee: $12
